How we write them

Four rules the authors keep.

These exist because most vendor papers are unreadable, and we have read a lot of them.

Method before claim

Every assertion is preceded by how it was measured, including sample size.

Negative results included

Where the approach underperformed, the paper says so and shows the data.

Reproducible where possible

Anonymised datasets and the scoring logic are described well enough to be argued with.

Written by practitioners

The authors are the analysts and engineers who built the thing, not a content team.

Who reads them

Three audiences, deliberately.

The papers are technical, but not all of them are for engineers.

  • Method detailEnough to evaluate the approach on its merits rather than on our word.
  • Failure modesThe specific conditions under which detection degrades.
  • Integration realityWhat it takes to collect the telemetry the model needs.
  • Coverage argumentsWhat behavioural baselining adds to a stack you already own.
  • Staffing implicationsWhat changes about alert volume, and therefore about rota planning.
  • Evidence qualityWhat you can hand an auditor afterwards.
  • Consequence framingWhat contained and uncontained incidents cost, in operational terms.
  • Programme sequencingWhich segment to start with, and why the tightest one first.
  • Honest limitsWhat this does not solve, so the board hears it from you first.
